Erected as the Vicariate Apostolic of Athabasca Mackenzie on 8 April 1862 as a suffragan of Edmonton. The Vicariate Apostolic of Athabasca was split off on 3 July 1901.
The name was changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Grouard on 15 March 1927.
Elevated to the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan on 13 July 1967.
